Marrakech - Sidi Mokhtar - Essaouira
Essaouira is 172Kms west of Marrakech, formerly Mogador is a quintessentially Moroccan town and one of the most enchanting places in Morocco. The town of Essaouira enjoys a particularly pleasant climate and a prime location for surfing.
It was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century when they established a base on the site where it now stands.
The town was built in 1760, by the Alaouite Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah who had decided to set up a naval base here.
The renowned French architect was appointed to be in charge of building the town, the harbor, and the fortifications, in the style of European fortresses.
Drive from Marrakech to Essaouira at 8 am, and take the pleasant road where Argan trees are to be seen scattered.
If you are lucky you might spot goats climbing the trees, you may visit one of the women’s cooperatives in which the exhibition of how Argan nuts are to be turned into oil and cosmetics.
Arriving in Essaouira with the brilliant whiteness of Essaouira because of its lime-washed walls gives a sudden impulse to visit the Ramparts, Sqalas (Sea Bastions), the Port, The Medina…..etc…
